  • Notes: Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932), writer and stenographer, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to free parents. His novel The Marrow of Tradition (1901) is often referred to as the first modern novel by an African-American author. The plot centers on the violent Wilmington, North Carolina riots of 1898. It is unique among early African-American fiction in that it involves whites as principal characters in roles other than the stereotype of slaver or slave owner. Chesnutt's mentor and critic, William Dean Howells, among others was not altogether happy with the novel, finding it a bit too bitter and angry.
Arthur Spingarn (1878-1971), avid book collector and later president of the NAACP (1940-1965) had asked Chesnutt if he would inscribe and sign some copies of his books. This apparently led to a long friendship.
