  • Notes: first edition. a presentation copy: "To Lorenzo [Dow Turner], one of God's tall angels who plays slide trombone in that same band with Gabriel. Zora Neale Hurston, Oct 1, 1934, Nashville, Tenn." A handsome copy of what many regard as the author's finest work. Hurston and the recipient, Lorenzo Dow Turner, had much in common. Both were folklorists, and both were dedicated to recording and preserving the oral history and traditions of the slave culture of the deep South.
