  • Notes: first appearance of this novelette from "uncle tom's children," débuting as the entire Literary Section of the New Masses for May of 1938. The May issue was the "Federal Writers' Number," and included stories by Alexander Godin, Saulo Levitt, Arnold Manoff and an article on the Spanish Civil War by Joseph North titled "The Loyalists' Program."
