(LITERATURE AND POETRY.) WRIGHT, RICHARD. The author''s large leather briefcase used by him when he was living in Paris. Classic briefcase with single front latch; several old labels affixed to the front and back Vp, 1930''s-1940''s

  • Notes: an extraordinary author''s briefcase. Richard Wright, author of Native Son, Uncle Tom''s Children and a number of other books, moved to Paris in 1946, and soon became a French citizen. There he made friends quickly with other expatriate black writers like Chester Himes and James Baldwin. Wright didn''t let any moss grow on him, and began an extensive tour through Europe, Asia and Africa. Along the way, he picked up a ferocious case of amoebic dysentery, which almost killed him. This briefcase traveled everywhere with him and it shows considerable wear. Provenance: his Paris friend writer, bibliographer and poet Michel Fabre.
