(LITERATURE.) Annual program of the Summer Literary Society based at Hampton Institute. 9, [1] pages. Printed wrappers, 6¾ x 4¾ inches; minimal wear. Hampton-Phoebus, VA, 1934

  • Notes: This program sets forth the year's upcoming meetings of a literary society studying "recent books relating to social, economic, and religious questions." 15 meetings were planned from October 1934 to May 1935, though the academic year, with readings set out in advance. In addition to works by white authors such as Thomas Mann, H.G. Wells, and Walter Lippmann, the group studied Langston Hughes' newly released first short story collection, "The Ways of White Folks." Membership was composed mainly of Black faculty and spouses from the Hampton Institute. For example, the society's librarian Charles S. Isham was a physics instructor at the Hampton Institute, his neighbor Gideon Smith of the Program Committee was a physical culture instructor there, and Dr. Thomas W. Turner of the Social Committee was head of the biology department. The program is dedicated to Turner's wife Laura, who died in April 1934.
