  • Notes: A literary reflection on the life of pioneering blues composer W.C. Handy, written by noted novelist John Oliver Killens (1916-1987). This article was written shortly after Handy's 1958 death. Accompanying it is a twice-signed typescript translation "L'Heritage de Handy" by the noted Afro-French author René Maran. This French translation appeared in the journal "Présence Africaine" in their June-July 1959 issue; Maran died in May 1960. We have not found "The Handy Legacy" published under its original title, but it was apparently published as "A Good Man Feeling Bad" in the March 1961 issue of "The Urbanite," a short-lived Black literary journal in New York.
