(LITERATURE.) Spencer Jackson. Black Survival.

(LITERATURE.) Spencer Jackson. Black Survival. 42, [1] pages including illustrated glossy wrappers. Quarto, 12 x 9 inches, minor wear; minor dampstaining; inscribed by the author on page [3]. Chicago: S. and E. Publishing, circa 1972

  • Notes: The Rev. Spencer Jackson (1910-1990) was a Baptist minister who organized the Black Heritage Cultural Theatrical Players, and toured with his wife and children as the Spencer Jackson Family, a gospel and soul singing group.

Jackson's introduction to this collection of his poetry explains that "Racial pride, protests, integration and how to walk with your fellow-man is deep within this book. Black Survival is not a book of hate or adverse thinking, but is intended to help people with the process of positive thinking. . . . We are attempting to keep the black offspring of slaves aware of their ancestors' ability to survive slavery." The 21 poems include "Our Black Women," "I'm Trapped," and "Is This Our Heritage?" The book also features illustrations by Berry Horton and Gerald Sanders, as well as a full-page photograph of the Spencer Jackson Family.

The work is undated, but it is mentioned in a 25 June 1972 Chicago Tribune article about Jackson, and OCLC states that the illustrations were later used in Alice Browning's 1973 book "Black n' Blue." None traced in OCLC or at auction.
