LIVINGSTON, WILLIAM. A Letter to the Right Reverend Father in God, John, Lord Bishop of Landaff.

LIVINGSTON, WILLIAM. A Letter to the Right Reverend Father in God, John, Lord Bishop of Landaff. 31 pages. 8vo pamphlet, disbound. London, 1768

  • Notes: London reprint of a New York pamphlet, defending the American clergy against the insults of the Church of England, and the efforts to establish an Anglican episcopate in America. John Adams thought this struggle pushed his generation toward the Revolution: "Apprehension of episcopacy contributed . . . as much as any other cause to . . . urge them to close thinking on the constitutional authority of parliament over the colonies" (Works of John Adams, 1856 edition, X:185). Livingston was a leader of the anti-episcopate forces, and this was an important salvo in a bitter pamphlet war. He was later a signer of the United States Constitution. Adams American Controversy 68-20b, Sabin 41642.
