Lodovico Dolce (1508-1568)

Sammelband of Octavo Tragedies Printed in the 1540s.

1) Thyeste Tragedia, Venice: Gabriel Gioli di Ferrarii, 1543.
2) Giocasta, Venice: Aldi Filii, 1549.
3) La Hecuba, Venice: Gabriel Gioli di Ferrarii, 1543.
4) Didone, Venice: Aldus, 1547.
All four plays bound together in full 17th century parchment over boards; text in italics in single column throughout with numerous woodcut printer's devices; spotting to contents, water stains and the occasional hole; 6 x 3 1/2 in.

Each of these works rarely comes to auction. Giocasta, a first edition, is Dolce's Italian translation of a Latin version of Euripides's Phoenissae. George Gascoigne (1535-1577) translated Dolce's tragedy into English as Jocasta, and it was performed in 1566 at Gray's Inn, the first Greek tragedy performed on the English stage.
