Watercolor and gouache on thick cream wove paper, 1947. 480x610 mm; 19x24 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right. Countersigned and inscribed "Houdain-- Pas-de-Calais" in ink, center verso. Scattered losses upper left edge.

An early work by this important, African-American artist. In 1937 Jones was awarded a General Education Board Foreign Fellowship to study in France. She went to Paris in 1937 where she studied painting at the Academie Julian. She learned to speak French fluently, and painted views of Paris and its surroundings. She describes her time in France as the first time she experienced the freedom to live and eat wherever she chose. She returned to Paris nearly every year for 20 years after her first trip.
