(LONG ISLAND--GOLD COAST ESTATE PROPERTY.) Sprague, C.W., Surveyor. Oak Openings. Property of James R. Wood. Cold Spring Harbor. Manuscript map in pen-and-ink and wash hand-color on paper. 25 3/4x38 3/4 inches sheet size; backed on old linen, toned and friable, one large vertical crease through image, several smaller cracks and creases, some edge losses. New York, circa 1864

  • Notes: Beautifully done manuscript survey map of the property of an early estate called Oak Openings owned by James Rushmore Wood, a prominent New York City surgeon and a founding member of the Bellevue Hospital Medical College. The map shows the Wood estate bisected north/south by Laurel Hollow Road and coming to a narrow northern border at the shore of Cold Spring Harbor. A small key in the ''Courses and Distances'' table refers to the property''s dwelling, barn, cow stables, summer house, flower gardens, boat-house and fish pond.

The property is significant as it was subsequently developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany as part of his sprawling Art Nouveau estate, Laurelton Hall, completed in 1904. The original Wood farmhouse shown on this map was ultimately converted into Tiffany''s private art gallery on the grounds. The map comes by descent of a close member of Tiffany''s circle, the superintendent of Laurelton Hall from 1911 to 1949.
