"The Jackie Gleason Show: American Scene Magazine." Portfolio of 24 costume designs for the first season of the televised talk and variety show The Jackie Gleason Show: American Scene Magazine, 1962. Pen, ink, watercolor, and graphite on thick paper, with some heightened in metallic paint. Image sizes vary, with each on approximately 280x215 mm; 11x8 1/2-inch sheets. Following the vaudevillian entertainment style prevalent in early television revues, Jackie Gleason hosted several variety series and talk shows on the small screen from 1949 through 1970. His most memorable character, Ralph Kramden, originally appeared in Gleason's first variety series, Cavalcade of Stars, before gaining fame on the classic sitcom The Honeymooners. The Jackie Gleason Show: American Scene Magazine, which premiered in 1962 and ran until 1970, marked Gleason's return to the tried-and-true sixty-minute variety show format, which featured monologues by Gleason, guest stars, skits, and musical episodes of The Honeymooners. Lou Eisele's glitzy costumes for American Scene Magazine reflect his experience designing for numerous Broadway productions throughout the 1940s.
