LOU HECHENBERGER (1907-1961)

NEW HAMPSHIRE. 1939.

39¼x25½ inches, 99¾x64¾ cm. New Hampshire State Planning and Development Commission, Concord.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; minor replaced losses and creases in margins.

The New Hampshire Historical Society lists Hechenberger as being born in Munich, and provides his occupation as ski instructor and artist. This is the first of two posters the artist designed promoting skiing in his adopted home of New Hampshire. Everett Potter writing for the International SKiing History Association explains, "Anyone who knows New Hampshire skiing will recognize the half-moon dip behind [the skier] as the lip of Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington, which also explains the sun visor. (Tuckerman in springtime is notorious for its glaring sun). Rendered in blocks of color with no facial detail, it's a powerful image."

Art of Skiing p. 119.
