LOUIS GUERRY (1859-1918 ) PALESTINE / P.L.M. 1898.
41 3/4x28 3/4 inches, 106x73 cm. F. Hugo d'Alesi, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears at top edge, into image; slight darkening in lower right margin.
One of the earliest posters, if not the very first, depicting the Holy Land. Occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1516, Palestine was more or less ruled by the Turks until the First World War, after which the country was taken over by the British. Here, advertising travel through the French rail system, the inset shows Bethlehem, and likely the larger image is of Jerusalem. Orientalist p. 43.
