LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926)

SALON DES CENT. 1897.

23 3/4x16 1/2 inches, 60 1/4x42 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: minor tears and slight time-staining at edges; minor creases in margins. Paper.

Rhead's international prominence led him to become the only American artist ever honored by a one-man show at Paris's famed Salon des Cent. For this show featuring 60 of his works, Rhead designed the poster in his trademark Arts and Crafts style, depicting a muse with palette and brushes in hand. Note that the colors on her palette are the same three that Rhead employs to execute this image. Kiehl 269 and pl. 51, DFP-I 468, Salon des Cent p. 61, Gold 198.
