"THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN OWES A CONSIDERABLE SUM" LOUIS XIV; KING OF FRANCE. Letter Signed, "Louis," to his ambassador in England the Count de Comminges, in French, requesting that he secure payment of a debt owed by King Charles II of England to the deceased Cardinal Mazarin. Text probably in the hand of his secretary, Toussaint Rose. 1 page, 8vo; moderate scattered foxing, folds. Paris, 29 May 1663

  • Notes: ". . . [T]ake in my name all appropriate measures to secure from the . . . King the payment . . . . You know well enough the affection I have for the house of my deceased cousin and particularly for he who is now the head of it to have no trouble understanding how much I have this matter at heart. . . ."
    Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-1661) served as France's prime minister after Richelieu and, after King Louis XIII's death, worked closely with Louis XIV's mother, Queen Anne, to strengthen France's power in Europe.
