Photographs of Reconstruction governor Benjamin Flanders.

New Orleans, LA, circa 1860 and 1870
3 items: pair of cabinet cards with minor wear by Theodore Lilienthal of New Orleans circa 1870 (one portrait with early caption on verso, one a joint portrait naming Flanders in pencil in image), and one uncaptioned quarter-plate daguerreotype portrait, 4¼ x 3¼ inches, minimal wear but in defective case.

  • Notes: Benjamin Franklin Flanders (1816-1896) was a New Hampshire native who went south to New Orleans in 1843, finding success as a newspaper editor, politician, railroad executive, and plantation owner. As a Unionist, he found it prudent to flee at the outbreak of the Civil War, but returned with the Union occupation in 1862. He served briefly in the United States Congress in 1863, was appointed as reconstruction Governor for six months in 1867, and was appointed mayor of New Orleans from 1870 to 1872. He remains the most recent Republican to serve as the city's mayor.

With--a collection of papers spanning 5 generations of the family of Governor Flanders's daughter Katherine: one carte-de-visite album, 5 cased images, and 0.3 linear feet of other family papers. The principals include: Rebecca Gurley Stewart (1780-1868), first photo in the album; her daughter Julia Stewart (1806-1881, who married Oliver Pelton), the keeper of the album; her son Edward Richmond Pelton (1840-1899), publisher of Eclectic Magazine and husband of Katherine Flanders (daughter of Governor Flanders); their daughter Katherine Isabelle "Belle" Pelton (1871-1943), who married Charles J. Green, including letters from her travels in Europe; and her daughter Katherine.
