(LOUISIANA.) [Livingston, Edward; and others.] Code Civil de l'Etat de la Louisiane. 8vo, contemporary calf, backstrip defective, worn; some worming, minor foxing and dampstaining. "Publié par un Citoyen de la Louisiane" [but Paris], 1825

  • Notes: "Thirteen years after Louisiana was admitted as a state, there was promulgated in 1825 the Civil Code of Louisiana -- the first, the best and the most famous of all American codes"-- Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection at New York University, page 72. Livingston's revision of the Napoleonic code would remain the core of Louisiana's legal system into the 20th century. The New Orleans printings in both French and English are quite scarce.
