LOUISIANA. SLAVE SALE BROADSIDE. Credit Sale of Family Slaves at Mrs. Caldwell's Hotel, Opposite the Pontchartrain Rail Road. By Beard, Calhoun & Co. Letterpress slave sale broadside, 23-1/2 x 18 inches, printed on pink paper (faded) in a wide variety of printers' fonts; some wear to the right margin; slight loss of paper, with no serious loss of lettering; one tiny hole with the loss on one letter, slightly right of center at the word "Caldwell." Louisiana, 1848

  • Notes: an exceptional slave sale broadside with a detailed list of "family slaves" (i.e. house servants) "Milley, a negress, aged 15 years, an excellent nurse and house girl. . fully guaranteed against the vices and maladies prescribed by law. Terms One Half Cash, balance in six months. Phillis, a negress, aged 24 years, a good French and American cook, an excellent washer and ironer. . . .Victorine, aged 30 years, creole negress, good cook, washer and ironer. . . . Isham, aged 26 years, an excellent cistern maker and fair carpenter.. . .Sally, aged 35 years, a stout field woman, washer and ironer, and her daughter Laura, aged 7 years. . . .Nancy, aged 13 years, stout house girl. . . .Grace, aged 12 years. ALSO: Several field hands, laborers, stevedores &c. The negroes can be seen the day previous to the sale at the Office of Beard, Calhoun & Co."
    An advertisement for this sale appeared in the New Orleans Times Picayune for 3 February, 1848.
