First edition, octavo, presentation copy inscribed by Lowell to jurist Learned Hand: "Robert Lowell takes pleasure in giving this book to Learned Hand," in blue ink on ffep; illustrated title and jacket art by Frank Parker; bound in light green publisher's cloth, spine lettered in black, top edge tinted yellow; lower joint just starting; with the original unclipped jacket; somewhat soiled, with a few chips and a small closed tear to top edge of upper panel; 8 1/2 x 5 3/8 in.

While Billings Learned Hand associated with many writers and artists throughout his career, his most notable friendship was with author J.D. Salinger, who Hand met while spending time in Cornish, New Hampshire. He is noted as being one of Salinger's only friends as the writer gradually retreated from society.
