(LUCAS, FIELDING.) The Art of Drawing, Colouring and Painting Landscapes, in Water Colours Accompanied with Ten Engravings. Additional title with vignette, and 10 numbered aquatints printed from 8 plates, all but 3 hand-colored. 8vo, original grey-green boards with printed title label, dampstained and scuffed, top joints starting, rebacked early with red calf gilt but with split down center of spine starting from head; plate III trimmed below plate mark, scattered light foxing and soiling, 3-inch black ink mark on additional title affecting "of," another similar mark near an early owner's ink signature on front blank. Engraved by William Kneass and printed by Joseph Robinson. Baltimore: Fielding Lucas, [1815]

  • Notes: first edition and the first printed american example of a popular genre. Lucas was among the most successful American publishers of the early 1800s and was one of the first to experiment with color illustration in books outside of large subscription works. The text is attributed to J. W. Alston, William Grogan, and William Cox. The plates are by William Strickland, the architect who studied with Benjamin Latrobe and became a leading exponent of the Greek Revival in America. The success of this popular drawing manual led Lucas to publish a more elaborate and larger version in 1827 focusing on Amercian scenery. Shaw & Shoemaker 33885; Bernard Halliday, catalogue no. 177 (nos. 61 and 155); Bennett, Practical Guide, page 69; Reese, Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books, 7.
