LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) HERKULES-BIER. 1926.
23 3/8x17 3/8 inches. Kunst im Druck, Munich.
Condition A: crease in image. Framed.
In the years leading up to and during the National Socialist regime in Germany, Hohlwein''s style began to exhibit his inherent conservative and nationalistic tendencies. Many of his posters had a severe, neo-classical style. This poster appears to be the first in a string of images he designed featuring strong, semi-clad young men selling libations and tinctures. Prototypical Aryans, they echo the monumental sculptures designed by Arno Breckman. Yet despite the shift in style and content, this image, as with many of Hohlwein''s earlier classic designs, still showcases his genius at working with the interplay of light and shadow. Hohlwein 223; Stuttgart 211.
