Ludwig Hohlwein

1874-1949

Universitäts - Tattersall. 1912.

Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in image; tape-repaired tear at right edge, slightly into image; minor loss at bottom right corner; time-staining in margins. Paper.

Designing this poster was certainly a pleasure for Hohlwein; a lover of animals and a passionate rider, he loved to represent horses. This tour-de-force design is an archetype of his virtuosity. Using only two colors and the white of the paper, he presents a saddled horse with a little terrier at his feet. Tattersall's is the most famous British auctioneer of horses, and the name has been liberally used in conjunction with the high end of the equestrian market around the world. Here, it advertises a private firm offering lessons, stables and riding equipment to Munich's upper classes.

Hohlwein / Stuttgart 72, DFP-III 1412, Frenzel pl 41. (var).
33¼x37¼ inches, 84½x94½ cm. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
