Ludwig Hohlwein

1874-1949

Zoologischer Garten Munchen. 1911.

Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image; colors attenuated. Framed.

Animals of all kinds were a source of inspiration for Hohlwein and he drew them with an ease and deftness born of respect. Animals feature in many of his posters and he was renowned beyond the poster world for his animal sketches. Thus he was the obvious choice for a commission to design the poster for the opening of the Munich Zoo in 1911. Employing magical strokes of color, he depicts a pair of eagles (the German national emblem) against a green background. The poster exists in two versions, the first was produced to announce the opening of the zoo on August 1, 1911 at 1:00 pm (many other sources incorrectly date the poster to 1912). This is the 2nd version, which has more text, explaining entry fees, travel directions and the times of concerts.
