Zárate (born 1951) is known for his political engagement and use of both Oaxacan and European artistic traditions. Born in Santa Catarina Cuanana, Zárate had an artistic inclination from a young age. After obtaining a degree in Industrial Engineering, he went on to study art. Zárate became active in the Oaxacan art community, inspired by Rufino Tamayo (see lots 249-258)) and Francisco Toledo (see lots 267-270). Through his talent in industrial design, Zárate won a scholarship to study in Paris and he lived in the city for over a decade. Drawn from numerous influences, his art makes references to Zapotec legends, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism and contemporary art movements; an inclusivity that has won him international recognition.
