  • Notes: An author, editor, explorer and activist, Charles Lummis was also an avid and prolific photographer. He traveled to Peru with the archaelogist Adolph Bandelier and lived for a time in Mexico, most commonly printing the relatively easy and portable cyanotypes of the scenes he found along the way. Lummis is famous for several outrageous events in his life, including his 143 day long walk from Cincinnati to Los Angeles en route to his new post as editor of the Los Angeles Times. Later, while recuperating from a stroke in New Mexico, Lummis occupied himself by shooting jack rabbits and began his long involvement as an activist for the Native American community. He also began a career as a freelance writer. His exposure of corrupt officials forced Lummis to flee to a town on the Rio Grande, where he was followed by a hit man who failed to kill him.
