M. D. SHERRING. 1906. 23.5 x16.125in. Condition B+: sharp horizontaland vertical folds and creases in image. An extremely rare and early Olympic Games poster, featuring a picture of William Sherring of Ontario. The Greek text proclaims "Sherring, winner of the marathon, ran 42 km in 2 hours and 51 minutes". He is surrounded by a copy of the 1906 Participation Medal (front and back), and a statue of Athenabearing the inscription "City of Athens-Winner of the Marathon-Ol ympic Games". The 1906 games were staged independently from the usualfour year Olympic cycle to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the modern games. Medals won have since been deemed unofficial by the International Olympic Committee.
