Interesting small archive ofcorrespondence between the poet/playwright and the artist, about the position of Japanese in America in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Contains two Typed Letters Signed, "A MacLeish," as the Director of the Office of Facts and Figures, to Noguchi, four Typed Letters Signed from Noguchi, as the chairman of the Nisei Writers and Artists Mobilization for Democracy, to MacLeish (including two carbon copies of letters signed and a brief TLS written in 1972) and a Typed Letter Signed by Allen Grover, Associate Director of the O.F.F. to Noguchi. In all, 7 letters. Format varies. Washington and San Francisco, vd (mostly January-February 1942) E800/1,200 MacLeish TLS, 6 February 1942: "You will be glad to know that we are doing all we can, by Press, radio, and other means, to make the loyal Japanese in this coun-try feel that they have a place here and that they can contribute to the cause of democracy in this crisis. At the same time,we are trying to prevent discrimination against the Japanese in this country who are loyal . . ." Noguchi, TLS, 13 February 1942: ". . . The timeliness of what should be said to the Japanese in this country is entirely dictated by the fortunes of war now so weighted against us One reaction to these events is the growth of racial bigotry already reflected in the press. Our national interest demands that we do not jeop-ardize our delicate relations to our one billion Allies of Asia by allowing such poison to go unchallenged . . ."
