Under the name of Marie Madeleine, the wealthy Baltic-born socialite established a name for herself as a writer of unusually lyrical, shockingly erotic poetry, prose, novellas, and short stories. In 1900, at the age of 19, she published her first collection, Auf Kypros [On Cyprus].
