Abstractionist Mae Alice Engron was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. After sustaining injuries while working as a civil servant, she attended the Herron School of Art, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1984 at the age of 42. She was an abstract painter who primarily worked with oil on canvas, although early in her practice, she also experimented with painting on foil to reflect light. Engron created her own style that focused on color and the creative process. She poured ink onto the canvas and tipped the canvas so the ink would roll around to create drips and runs of black or colored ink. With other bodies of work, Engron would use ink drips as the pattern for her abstract painting to execute works in geometric abstraction. Engron was a featured artist in many exhibitions in Indianapolis, Indiana, specifically the Indiana State Museum, Indiana Black Expo, Indiana Art League, and Indianapolis Public School Business Center. Her work is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Indiana State Museum.
