MAHLER, GUSTAV. Letter Signed, "Mahler," as Director of the Vienna Hof-Operntheater, to "Dear esteemed Sir" [Gerhard Schjelderup?], in German, returning his opera [not present]. 1 page, 4to, "Die K. und K. Direction des Hof-Operntheaters" stationery; faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, folds, remnants of hinging at upper edge verso. Vienna, 25 August 1898

"I sincerely regret that I cannot yet make a decision regarding your submitted opera, 'The Power of Love' [ Der Liebe Macht].
"As the new works have already been decided for the near future, I take the liberty of returning the work so that you have it at your disposal . . . ."
In 1894, Norwegian composer Gerhard Schjelderup composed the two-act opera, The Power of Love--whose title was later changed to Norwegian Wedding [ Norwegische Hochzeit]; it was performed in Prague in March of 1900 and published in Leipzig the same year.
