(MAINE.) Original daguerreotype photograph of Neal Dow. Half-plate daguerreotype, 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches oval to sight in period metal mat, 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches; uncased, not sealed, quite crisp and clear with just two very light scratches in image, verso taped. Np, circa 1850s

  • Notes: Neal Dow (1804-1897) was a leading temperance advocate, mayor of Portland, Governor of Maine, Civil War general, and third-party candidate for president in 1880. This image appears to date from the heyday of daguerreotypes circa the early 1850s, when Dow was about 50 years old and holding public office in Maine. The present example appeared at auction previously in 2013, and thus graces the hallowed pages of Wikipedia as its primary image of Dow. Provenance: from the collection of William Wheeler III.
