(MAINE.) Clifford, Nathan. Personal account book kept as Attorney-General and diplomat under Polk.

(MAINE.) Clifford, Nathan. Personal account book kept as Attorney-General and diplomat under Polk. 59 manuscript pages. 4to, original 1/4 calf, tastefully rebacked, minor wear; approximately 25% or 50% of the volume appears to be in Clifford's rugged hand and the volume is signed by him on page 7. Np, 1839-49

  • Notes: Nathan Clifford (1803-1881) served as a United States Representative for Maine from 1839 to 1843, and as Attorney General under President Polk from 1846 to 1848, followed by 18 months as envoy to Mexico just after peace was concluded. He later served a long term on the Supreme Court.
This book details Clifford's personal finances, apparently at his home in Newfield, ME, including household and family expenses, and some relating to his law practice, most notably with his law partner and brother-in-law, a prominent Maine politician named Caleb R. Ayer (1813-1883). Some of the accounts are in Clifford's hand; others may have been kept by his wife Hannah (Ayer) Clifford (1811-1892) during Clifford's time away in Washington and Mexico.
