(MAINE.) Correspondence of historian and diplomat George Folsom.

(MAINE.) Correspondence of historian and diplomat George Folsom. 14 letters to and about Folsom; condition generally strong. Various places, 1822-1866 and undated

  • Notes: George Folsom (1802-1869) was raised in Portland, ME, wrote widely on the history of Maine and other subjects, moved to New York in 1837, and practiced law and politics there. The first of these letters was addressed to Folsom in 1822 while he was still an undergraduate at Harvard. An 1847 legal letter is co-signed by future governor and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. A letter from the noted genealogist James Savage requests edits and comments for the Folsom entry in the Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, 17 May 1859. An 11 February 1853 letter from nephew Edward F. Baker describes life in Portland. Most notable is a long 17 February 1849 letter of recommendation written for Folsom by General John E. Wool for newly elected president Zachary Taylor, hoping that Folsom might be "placed with the appointment of minister to some court in Europe." Folsom was indeed appointed as minister to The Hague and served there for 4 years.
