Writes his address and phone on Harvard newspaper

Malcolm X

Complete copy of The Harvard Crimson Signed and Inscribed, with his holograph street address and phone number, "Malcolm X / 113 Lenox / New York, NY / Mo 3 9772," in upper margin. The newspaper, March 25, 1961, issue featuring an article whose headline is "Malcolm X Demands States for Negroes, Calls Token Integration 'Mere Pacifier'," in which Paul S. Cowan quotes Malcolm X explaining why he was visiting college campuses at the time: "so that they can know what time it is." 19½x14¼ inches, folded sheet forming four pages; moderate even toning, few tiny holes along folds, few short closed tears at upper edge (not affecting inscription).

Np, [March 1961].
With---Three original decals, each showing the Black Panther Party logo above the words "Black Power." Each 3¼x3¼ inches; unused with backing intact. 1960s.

The building at 113 Lenox Avenue in Harlem was where Malcolm X had established the headquarters of the Black Muslim movement, with a conference room on the fourth floor, a temple on the third floor, and storefronts on the street level, including a luncheonette that served food conforming to Elijah Muhammad's recommendations. In 1964, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam to form his own organization, Muslim Mosque, setting up operations at his Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood on 113th street. Bitterness between the two groups mounted until a member of the Nation of Islam assassinated Malcolm X on February 21, 1965. Three days later, the mosque in the building on Lenox Avenue was fire-bombed, presumably in retaliation for the assassination. A year later, calls to the phone number, MO 3-9772, were answered by workers at the Shabazz Restaurant on the ground floor of the Lenox Avenue building.
