(MALEVICH, KAZIMIR)
Group of 3 installation views of his Constructivist exhibition at the Grosse Berliner Kunsthaus. Printing-out paper prints, each is 6x9 inches (15.3x23 cm.), with numeric and handwritten notations, two with the name "Lissitzky" on verso. 1927
-
Notes: a scarce and important suite of 3 photographs relating to a major malevich exhibition at this Berlin venue, which was on display from May through September 1927.
It is unclear whether the photographs were taken by El Lissitzky, whose name appears in period script on verso of two of the prints. These images were reproduced in the catalogue accompanying a Malevich exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, although no such credit is attributed. Lissitzky, however, was in Germany at the time of Malevich's show, and closely monitored Bauhaus activities. Indeed, the influence of Russian Suprematism/Constructivism on Bauhaus practice is well-documented. Malevich was known to have had an association with its champions, including Gropius, Moholy Nagy, and Kandinsky, and was also a close friend and personal associate of Lissitzky.
