MANNING, EDWARD. Six Months on a Slaver, a T rue Narrative. 18mo, original publisher's green cloth; front cover stamped in red and black spine title in black; lightly rubbed. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1879 E250/350 FIRST EDITION. Curious volume of a true narrative. The writer and his friend signed on a "whaling" ship in New London; then noticed the ship was particularly clean, while whalers were notoriously filthy and bad smelling. It was soon apparent the ship was a slaver. Eventually, the slave cargo was transferred at sea to another ship, and the name of the author's ship was taken off and changed. Part of Harper's "Half Hour Series." Not in Schomburg or Blockson Collections, nor other standard reference. Also not in Wright as fiction.
