Plat of the Second Addition to Valley City, in Fairfield Township Tus. Co., Ohio. Laid Out by the Separatist Society of Zoar, Ohio. Ink survey plat with graphite additions on a sheet of wove paper. 17 1/2x19 1/2 inches sheet size; laid on period linen, various tears, soft creases and surface soiling.

Unique nineteenth-century manuscript plat maps laid out by the trustees of the Separatist Society of Zoar, Ohio for a communal village named "Valley City" in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. "Valley City" can be identified as the spot of the modern-day unincorporated community of Zoarville, approximately two miles down the Tuscarawas River from the historic village of Zoar proper.

The Society of Separatists of Zoar was founded in 1817 by German immigrants with the support of Philadelphia Quakers and survived as a dissenting religious community in eastern Ohio through the end of the nineteenth century. With industrial and commercial interests permeating the community, the partial abandonment of traditional pacifism introduced by the Civil War, and especially the coming of the railroads to Zoar in 1884, tensions between the old and new ways became unsustainable. Prior to the Society''s eventual dissolution, an attempt by the Zoarite trustees to incorporate this new community of "Valley City" was hoped for, but never officially achieved.
