Quarto manuscript on paper in Spanish, twenty-two numbered leaves, text in a neat italic hand in brown ink, two columns throughout, more than two-thirds of final page decorated with fancy penwork designs; bound in limp parchment with alum-tawed ties; contemporary Mexican ownership inscription of a sister of the Domincan Convent of Santa Rosa, "de esta ciudad de Los Angeles," (modern Puebla, Mexico) on verso of last leaf; 8 x 5 1/2 in. Spain, late 17th-early 18th century.

  • Notes: Columba of Rieti (1467-1501) was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1625. She practiced anoxeria mirabilis, wore a hairshirt, and slept on thorns as acts of mortification. She belonged to the Domincan order and served as a prioress in the city of Perugia for eleven years. The nuns from the Convent of Santa Rosa in Puebla, Mexico are credited with inventing the recipe for mole poblano.
