(MANUSCRIPT.). Lapidario de Rey D. Alfonso X. Full color facsimile of the illuminated manuscript prepared for King Alfonso X of Spain. 4to, 3/4 polished brown calf gilt, few scuffs and remnants of removed sticker to lower spine; ex-collection Joseph O. Gill with his bookplate, description of the volume taped to front endpaper. Madrid: Imprenta de la Iberia, a cargo de J. Blasco, 1881
- Notes: brilliant facsimile of the lapidary manuscript preserved in the San Lorenzo Library in the Escorial, Madrid. The original, created in 1278, treats magical properties of stones and metals in connection with the Zodiac and the various celestial bodies reflecting the belief held at that time of their influence on all things on Earth, including gems, metals, and other substances in the ground. Alfonso X, the Wise, (1221-1284) was king of Castille and Leon. The Pope thwarted his attempts to become Holy Roman Emperor, but he achieved success in capturing the cities of Cartagena and Cadiz in the wars against the Moors. He remains known most as a lawmaker and patron of literature and learning. Evans, Magical Jewels, London, 1922.
