Marcello Dudovich

1878-1962

Bitter Campari. Circa 1904.

Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases and abrasions in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on Chartex with machine-sewn fabric border.

If ever a poster epitomized the product it advertised, it would be this multi-sensory, ruby-colored sultry image from one of Italy's most accomplished Liberty Style artists.

Dudovich uses color and image, in a manner that seems far ahead of its time to take brand identity to a sensual place. The result is immersive, with an image that not only exudes the recognizable color of the beverage, but also portrays the uninhibited outcome of an evening fueled by the aperitif.

A number of the most celebrated and renowned fin de siècle artists worked on Campari advertising in the years prior to the First World War, including Adolfo Hohenstein, Marcello Dudovich and Leonetto Cappiello.

Menegazzi 424, Dudovich 61.
55x38¾ inches, 139¾x98½ cm. Chappuis, Bologna.
