Marcello Dudovich

1878-1962

Vermouth Bianco Isolabella. Circa 1920.

Condition A-: minor repaired tears at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; small replaced losses at top right and bottom left corners.

Dudovich was one of the most prolific and important of the Italian poster artists. He designed more than six hundred posters in a career that spanned more than half a century. His formative years were spent working under Adolfo Hohenstein and Leopoldo Metlicovitz at the G. Ricordi printing company in Milan, where he worked exclusively up until the First World War (for a few years, between 1899-1906, he left to work with a different printer Chappuis, in Bologna). After the war ended, Dudovich became the art director at IGAP, another large printer in Milan. For this liquor advertising poster, he sheds the Italian Golden Age aesthetic of his earlier posters, like Bitter Campari in 1904 ( See Swann sale 2730 Lot 105) for a more Cappiello-esque style.

We have not found other examples at auction since 2001. Rare
55½x39½ inches, 141x100¼ cm. Della Ditta E. Isolabella Figlio, Milan.
