  • Condition: Margaret Bourke-White's pair of photographs from Africa are both wonderful examples of her documentary imagery and are filled with energy and intimacy. Both are in very good condition, with a contrasty, lustrous surfaces.

Both of these prints have stamps and markings on verso associated with newsrooms and reproduction, and the handling imperfections noted here can be attributed to that use. Neither print has margins, and both also show very small and scattered superficial chips at the extreme edges. Both prints are also ferrotyped and show very faint surface inconsistencies associated with that process, but this too is not distracting.

    Children seated at school
Under quite strong, raking light the surface of this print evidences scattered short and fine linear cracklure lines, none of which are obtrusive or immediately apparent. But overall the print is exceptionally clean, and presents handsomely, with detail and contrast. Print verso is generally quite clean. The print is hinged to the undermat.

    Women of the Serowe
The edges of this print evidence scattered tiny creases from handling, most of which are primarily noticeable in raking light. The small chips at the edges and corners are also slightly more visible. This print has more stamps and markings on verso, and was likely used more for reproduction purposes. These imperfections do not at all detract from the striking composition, taking from slightly below the two women. The image is contrasty and rich, with a bright, descriptive surface.
