MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE (1904-1971) Goodyear Zeppelin, U.S.S. Airship Akron, World's Largest Airship.

MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE (1904-1971)
Goodyear Zeppelin, U.S.S. Airship Akron, World's Largest Airship. Warm-toned silver print, the image measuring 16¾x22¼ inches (42.5x55.9 cm.), the original duralumin frame 20¼x26 inches (51.4x66 cm.), with Bourke-White's signature in ink on print recto; the frame with the incised plaque. 1931

  • Condition: This classic photograph by Bourke-White of the USS Airship Akron in the original frame (made from the body of the airship) is in overall very good condition. The image area evidences deep shadows and bright, creamy highlights. The sheet appears generally neat, with trace soiling on recto which is nearly indiscernable. These is a faint stain at the far left side within the sky, but this is isolated and largely obscured by the warm-toned print.

There is a small isolated area at the far top right edge of the sheet, another at the lower right, and a third at the lower left that appears to have stuck to the underside of the glass, an issue we have seen before with this work. These small areas are not at all immediately apparent or distacting. There is a black spec at the far right edge on the surface of the sheet. The white specs in the lower portion of the image area appear to be in the negative, and not on the surface of the print. Though discernible, these imperfections are confined to the edges and do not detract from the print quality or impressive composition.

The sheet is in the original frame, with the original backing and glass. This print was not removed from the original frame for inspection due to the fragile nature of the lead prongs on frame verso.

Overall, a beautiful example of Bourke-White's industrial sensibility, in overall very good condition.
