  • Condition: [Richard Lorenz became the Exectuor of Estate of William Justema]

This rare vintage photograph Wig of the Chinese Impersonator Chew Li Hong, circa 1922 by Mather is overall in good to very good condition. The print is rich and lustrous, with both dimension and tonal variety.

Under close examination, the surface evidences scattered superficial inconsistencies, primarily located in the background of the image area. Most visible and as visible on the online catalog is the area of slight tonal variation on the left side of the bun. While apparent, this is not overly distracting. Under raking light, we can notice a couple soft half-moon creases in the hair and in the upper right quadrant. These are not immediately apparent and remain discreet. Finally, there is a diagonal crease (with no emulsion loss) along the upper left edge, a minuscule soft crease on the tip of the upper right corner, and a tiny crease on the lower left corner (with two specs of emulsion loss). These last slight inconsistencies are also not immediately apparent and not distracting at all.

The print has no margins and the edges are clean. The verso evidences an area of blackish soiling which seems inherent to the print, and has impacted the print recto as mentioned above. Otherwise, it is clean, with Mather's credit, title, and date in Justema's hand in pencil on verso.
