Marilyn would hire Melson two days before the premiere of How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), just prior to her marriage to Joe DiMaggio and in the midst of contract disputes with Twentieth Century Fox. As their relationship evolved, Melson became an important maternal figure to Marilyn, eventually becoming her mentally ill mother Gladys's guardian and an administratrix of Marilyn's estate after her death.
