MARIO GIACOMELLI (1925-2000) Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi occhi.

MARIO GIACOMELLI (1925-2000)
Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi occhi. Silver print, the image measuring 15 7/8x11 7/8 inches (40.3x30.2 cm.), with Giacomelli's signature in ink and his "Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi occhi" stamp on verso. Circa 1960s; printed 1970s

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

This series title takes its name from a poem by Cesare Pavese. Giacomelli spent many years photographing an elder care facility in Senigallia where his mother had worked as a laundress, and the images he made are deeply personal, addressing his own fear of aging. Tightly cropped and unflinching in their perspective, the work is both stark and beautiful.

  • Condition: This Giacomelli print is in very good condition. The surface is lustrous and bright, with the photographer's characteristic emphasis on contrast and tightly-cropped compositions.

Upon close inspection in strong, raking light, it is possible to find scattered spots of retouching in the lower portion of the image area. These are not distracting, and are not visible when viewing the print directly and under typical conditions. There is a very small diagonal crease in the lower left corner, and the corners evidence scattered minor and superficial minuscule chips (there are no margins). These are also not distracting.

Print verso is clean and bright.
