  • Notes: This log book begins as a routine account of a merchant voyage from Hartford, CT to Barbados. The schooner Henry left Hartford on 5 June 1804 under Captain G. Manter. They arrived in Barbados on 2 August, where they had "one man prest aboard of a privateer." They proceeded to Martinique on 10 August, and spent the following weeks unloading horses, pork, and other trade goods, and then loading molasses and sugar for the return trip.
While still in port, a gale hit on 3 September. The next and final entry tells the story: "At 2 a.m. the schooner Henry dragg'd two or three rods in shore & brought up at 3 a.m., struck the bottom & carrid away the ruder. The gale still increasing at half past four, went aginst the winds ashore, with much truble. The people got on shore but nothing belonging to the vessel but one trunk was save. At 7 a.m. thare wan't nothing to be seen of the vessel. In consequence of the gale has don a grade deal of damage. There has a great number of vessels that was a lyeing in the road, drove ashore." This logbook must have been in the lone trunk which made it to shore that night, before the ship disappeared under the waves.
