(MARITIME.) Painting of the steamer Nightingale, which was lost off Mexico.

(MARITIME.) Painting of the steamer Nightingale, which was lost off Mexico. Oil painting, 9 1/2 x 14 inches (possibly a hand-painted photograph), in period frame with early nails; chipping to paint surface, not examined out of frame. Np, circa 1868

  • Notes: The steamer Nightingale was built for the mercantile firm Maxson, Fish & Company of Mystic, CT in 1861. During much of the Civil War, it served as a supply steamer for the United States Navy in the Gulf of Mexico. After the war, it was lost off Vera Cruz in 1868 when it foundered at its anchorage during a storm; seven men were lost. It should not be confused with the USS Nightingale, which had been a slave ship before the war and then also served in the Navy. See Warshauer, Inside Connecticut and the Civil War, pages 49-51; and a similar painting of the Nightingale at the Mystic Seaport Museum.
