Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992)

Autograph Letter Signed.

October 8, 1950.
Letter in English, 3 1/2 pages on Claridge's letter paper to English journalist and film critic Ernest Betts (1896-1975); at first thanking him for his letter "please don't feel sorry," and then asking why he didn't come to her rescue as she was berated by the British press; folded, with original holograph envelope; 6 1/2 x 5 in.

"I wonder why you did not make all the journalists leave sooner because I thought you were present to help me when the situation became difficult. I could not break it up myself. I also had hoped you would have stopped them when they started on rather tactless questions because here again I was helpless. I have never been confronted with questions of that sort ever in the States. Therefore I beg you in the future to help me out should the occasion present itself. I was not prepared, I guess, one has to get used to the British Journalists, who seemed to have no other interest than: 'How old are you? and Do you feel old? etc.'"
